Abstract

Introduced in the 1960s by Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev, the Kardashev scale outlines degrees of technological development for hypothetical extraterrestrial civilizations. Since then, several other scales have been proposed to attempt to classify levels of technological development and matter manipulation. This article brings forth such scales for consideration and proposes an interpretation following the framework of cosmotechnics, proposed by Chinese philosopher Yuk Hui: considering the technological dimension of a culture or society as the point of interaction between the cosmological and moral dimensions, the article suggests applying this interface using cosmic scales as a reference for consideration and outlining possibilities in the field of Astrobiology and proposing ideas for Astrophilosophy.
